****Let me make this discussion because I have observed that some issues were returning loop about a device that can clearly modify the gaming experience and generates often antagonistic responses.

The object here is to speak of headsets for the game, not the best audiophile headphones at the time. That means :
- Headphones with an integrated mic
- Headphones intended primarily to the game, not the music listening
I say right away that I am far from expert in sound, but I found the answers in my research that I had never obtained here. Here are the results of my research, which I hope many of you will make the necessary corrections and additions. Obviously some of the selection criteria are the same as for Stereo headphones ...

1. A headset

If this sounds silly, it seems essential to redefine that play with a lapel microphone as the excellent Zalman ZM-Mic1 not be suitable for everyone. PC peripherals already have a plethora of son, why add one? Driving behind the wheel with an additional micro wire between the legs do not bring happiness to everyone. Etc. etc.
You must keep in mind that a headset is a set that must be homogeneous if you want your conversations Ducks (and others, it is not dirty) are audible. This implies a quality microphone, which is far from being the case for all gamers helmets.

2. Comfort

When you play for hours on end, the comfort of the helmet becomes paramount. Several factors contribute to this:
- The size headphones on the contrary an on-ear headphones (based on ears), circumaural headphones (around the ears) offers increased comfort. But on one condition: that the edge of the pads will not come tighten the ear! We will see later that the size headphones also affects the spatial experience.
- The material pads: a player often perspire. So do not dripping his helmet, slides or conversely absorbs perspiration.
- Tightening: choosing a helmet is based on his own head. A player who has a small head will not feel the same comfort another with a strong head (and I know there are some on this board!) So we will check carefully whether the greenhouse helmet, if the arch is easily adjustable, if the settings are reliable and solid etc.
- Weight: it can be prohibitive. Spend 4 or 5 hours straight game with too heavy a helmet can tire the neck and clearly alter the gaming experience.

3. The strength

This is obvious, but more so for a device that is constantly manipulated, especially at the micro, manufacturing quality account. The strength of the arch that holds the two headphones is also paramount. From this point of view, beware of entry helmets to the first fall will make the soul.
Warning ! The volume control can be a factor of choice as well as lugging a lapel microphone wire is not a panacea, a bitoniau dangling along the wire is unpleasant. Moreover, the volume control module manufacturing quality is rather uneven patterns. A too fragile order reduce the lifetime of the entire helmet.
Finally, it should be noted that the service can be a selection criterion. One of Logitech, in particular, is exemplary.

4. Mini-jack or USB?

So far, the headsets were, like their counterparts audiophile headphones, connected by two single jacks: green for headphones; red for the microphone. For some years now popping new helmets "oriented gamers" USB connected. These devices have the feature to incorporate a mini sound card decodes different types of effects and spatializations.

- A headset connected mini-jack means that you own a quality sound card, whether the chipset integrated into the motherboard, or a sound card type of dedicated X-Fi Titanium (which will better sound in all cases). If you do not already have one, count about 70 euros extra.
- A headset connected by USB will depend on the sound card that embeds, with significant differences between the models. Indeed, the sound card built-in shorts headphones that present in the PC or the chipset of the motherboard. Another disadvantage of the USB: it is necessary to connect the headset before launching an application under penalty of having to restart for it to be considered.
Warning ! The USB headsets are often very sensitive to parasites! The same model can behave differently depending on the computer on which it is connected. In this case, a connection via USB hub can sometimes solve the problem.

5. The heart of the problem: the spatial

Here we come to what most differentiates normally a headset for the game of audiophile (primarily for music listening): precisely locate enemies in an FPS, hear where someone passes you in a game of cars etc.
How to return in two atria only the spatial a game in 5.1 or 7.1?
What then choose: stereo headphones or multi-channel headphones?

To test the virtual spatialization, I invite you to listen here. Thank you to engineer for the link.

Two systems are available to us:

Stereo headphones

This is simulated in a simple stereo headphone spatial effects. In this case, no need for USB. Headphones, connected mini-jack on your sound card (or built quality chipset), recreates the effects front-rear / left-right in only two speakers. See here and here for more technical. Note now that a good open headphones restores better spatial closed his counterpart. The Razer Carcharias is as such a model of its kind. But the quality surround pays: an open helmet passes the sounds ... in both directions! Some seek this aspect to maintain contact with the outside, others playing in a noisy environment may be disrupted. This factor is to be considered also if you do not want to wake your neighbors at night!

NB: Explore in detail the specifications of your sound card to get the right sound virtualization settings including headphones. On a XFI Titanium, for example, you need to activate "XFI CMSS-3D" ...

The multi-channel headphones (5.1 or 7.1)

This is helmets which include smaller physical speakers in each ear. These materials are relatively new design, present almost exclusively in helmets for players, and intended to return more faithfully a multi-channel sound, like a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system.
The youth of the process that manufacturers Hifi / audiophile do not produce quality material in this area. But hardware manufacturers saw this as an interest in the game (and sales?).
These devices have an integrated natively sound card that computes the spatial experience for the various speakers of the helmet.

These new multi-channel systems they offer a better return of the spatial sound? Do they offer adequate sound quality equivalent to good stereo headsets? These rather expensive helmets (on average 150 to 180 euros) they give for your money? Can they be used with a sound card that you already own? In other words, we can "bypass" the USB sound card to use its own sound card? A good stereo headset coupled with a good sound card does not he produce better sound / spatial these helmets several speakers?

This is to answer all these questions I asked myself as I invite you to insert your feedback on the helmets you could test yourself.
